Studies and Research on the Mind-Body Connection for Healing

Hippocrates once wrote, “The natural healing force within each one of us is the greatest force in getting well.”

The ancient Greeks used the mind-body connection for healing on a regular basis as a normal way of healing, and it was considered an important aspect in the health of an individual. This was put to the wayside when modern medicine made its appearance.

This ideal has just recently started to be taken seriously again, and is being proven in studies and research. The following visualization therapy information was supplied by The Silva Life System of which I am an affiliate because of their outstanding research, programs and reputation.

The Visualization Therapy

There was a 61 year old man diagnosed with a terminal case of throat cancer with his weight dropping to under 100 lbs. He could hardly swallow or breathe. His survival rate was at 5%. Doctors didn’t want to put him on radiation therapy as they wondered if he could survive the treatment.

After giving considerable consideration, the doctors decided to try the radiation therapy. Dr. O. Carl Simmonton, Medical Director of the Cancer Counseling and Research Center in Dallas, Tx was asked to be involved in the patient’s treatment.

Dr. Simonton told the patient he had the ability to control the progress of his disease and gave him a few relaxation and creative visualization techniques.

The patient was to visualize:

  • The radiation was pinpoints of energy bombarding the cancer cells
  • The cancer cells would be unable to repair the damage they suffered
  • His white blood cells would overcome the cancerous cells
  • The cancer cells would flush out of his body through his kidneys and liver

Results: The Patient experienced almost no ill side effects from the treatment. He regained his weight and the cancer was gone.

The Simonton Center (www.simontoncenter,com) has helped thousands of cancer patients benefit from imagery therapy. Dr. Simonton’s wife said “Probably the single most important tool we have is the mental imagery technique developed by the Silva Life System”.

The Placebo and Psychosomatic Effects

The placebo effect has been known about for years. Doctors know a patient can manifest self-healing by simply believing they will be healed. A patient would take a sugar pill thinking it would cure their ills, and it would. We’ve all heard about it. It also goes with knowing about ills and diseases, and contracting them as I wrote about in my last post.

It is the beliefs you have about something that makes it harmful or not. If you believe it is harmful, it will tend to be true. There was a study using 40 subjects. They were all given a saline solution to inhale and were told it was allergenic.

19 of the 40 developed asthmatic symptoms, 12 developed bronchial spasms which completely disappeared minutes after being given another saline solution which they were told was medicine that would alleviate their symptoms.

Placebo

Placebo

All modern drugs today are tested against a placebo before being released to the public and many former medications have been taken off the market when it was found the healing properties were only due to the placebo effect.

I remember a great aunt who always seemed to get her illness and health issues based on what she heard about from friends and family. We found it amusing and thought she was just imagining she had these illnesses, when in fact she actually did have some of them.

Placebo Effect with Surgery

In 1994, Dr. J Bruce Moseley had 10 patients scheduled for an operation to relieve arthritic pain in their knees. Two of the patients underwent arthroscopic surgery, scraping and rinsing of the knee joint, three had rinsing alone, five had no procedure done at all with just a cut on the knee to give them the impression they had gone through the surgery.

Six months after the surgery, all the patients reported a large decrease in the pain in their knees without the five without the surgery knowing they had not had it performed on them.

Hypnosis and Mind-Body Interaction

Did you know a good hypnotist can actually get a person to tan their skin? I’m sure you’ve all heard of the hypnotist that told someone that they were holding a red hot item and a blister forms on their skin. In a study, one in five people developed a blister from touching the item.

Hypnosis is being used in place of anesthesia in surgery. It is also used to help with skin conditions, bronchial conditions, pain management, weightloss, illness and disease. Kristen Prevallet states on her website http://www.mindbodystudies.com, “Hypnosis is grounded in the belief that the most successful healing and the most dramatic changes happen when you become your own health advocate.”

My Testimonial

Six years ago, I was diagnosed with Trochanteric Bursitis in the right hip, which caused severe pain to radiate down my thigh. For the next six years, I had the coritsone shots, anti-inflammatory medications and an experimental plasma shot, none of which helped. The Orthopedic Surgeon said the next step would be surgery. After having had surgery on my shoulder and elbow, it was the last thing I wanted.

Finally, with the use of hypnosis tapes, I was able to use the mind-body connection to heal the bursitis and have had no pain in my hip and thigh for the past 4 months. I have also been able to alleviate all symptoms of diabetes and fibromyalgia.

I use the tapes recorded by Dr. Steven G. Jones, who is an internationally known hypnotherapist of the highest calibre. I was so impressed with the results I have seen that I am now an affiliate of his. You can find an extraordinary list of hypnosis tapes at http://betterlivingwithhypnosis.com covering all aspects of life and health.

This is mind-body healing, and everybody has the ability to heal themselves in order to live an abundant life that everyone deserves.

Mind-Body Healing and Your Abundant Health

What is Abundant Health?

Having abundant health means having health in great quantity or, being very healthy. Is that not what we all want for ourselves? I am sure there are those that don’t, and I believe it is caused by a craving for attention, and subconsciously believing illness and disease are the only way to get this attention.

The next few blogs will be dedicated to mind-body healing. There is just too much information and too many cases to fit on one!

I believe we all can positively affect our health if we can place our focus on our thoughts, feelings and attitudes. The mind-body connection is so much stronger than most will believe. Although I am not the picture of health YET, I do believe my thoughts, feelings and attitudes have affected my health, first negatively, and then positively. This is my story.

Psychosomatic Illness

While growing up, I had a great-aunt who was constantly getting ill, claiming health issues of one sort or another. The adults would always talk about how she would seem to contract almost anything a friend, or friend’s friend or just about anyone she heard/read about had contracted.

They would shake their head and talk about her psychosomatic illnesses. Today, through studies, many scientists and doctors are finding that a lot of illnesses and diseases are psychosomatic. A psychosomatic disorder is a disease which involves both mind and body (http://www.patient.co.uk/health/psychosomatic-disorders).

I was always told I was so much like my mother. I was thrilled with this as I adored her and hoped to be just like she was when I grew up.

And, as I grew up, I watched her suffer through one health crisis after another. She was mentally strong in ways; but in others, not so much. She carried so much inner turmoil and emotional burden on her shoulders, unable to detach her feeling and emotions from what an alcoholic husband, unloving and judgmental mother-in-law and inconsiderate, selfish children put on her.

As an Adult

From my mid 20’s, I didn’t take care of myself, ate all the wrong foods, drank too much, smoked like a chimney, and, until my mid 30’s took more than my fair share of recreational drugs. As I reached my 40’s, I was a very good candidate for an early death with illness and disease accompanying me all the way.

Late 40's

Late 40’s

I began to have one health issue after another into my mid 50’s. These health issues didn’t mimic those of my mother though. While her illnesses were internalized, my mind chose a whole new route. Instead of internal organs, most of mine were muscular-skeletal with a few odd glandular issues here and there. The list just kept growing and growing, and I was approved for disability as of May, 2010 at the ripe old age of 54.

The “AHA” Moment

With all of the self-help and spiritual books I’d read, I finally stumbled upon information regarding the mind-body connection. I was amazed, when I thought back on my mom’s life and health issues, how much her mental and emotional condition could have, and did, affect the health of her body.

I then took a long hard look at my own emotional and mental state, along with my physical health. I could see the correlation between the most stressful and painful times of my life and the onslaught of illness and disease. By then, I had been diagnosed with multiple illnesses, diseases and syndromes. I was taking 11-15 medications, depending on what was going on with my body.

Today

Today

So, through meditation, hypnosis and creative visualization, I eventually learned to pay better attention to my thoughts, feelings and emotions. I have been able to decrease my medications down to 2-3 and plan on being dependent on none by summer of 2015. I feel better than I have in years, have more energy and sleep through the night.

To many, this may not seem like much; but, it wasn’t long ago I didn’t believe I would make it to my 65th birthday.  Today, I’m looking forward to abundant health for the rest of my long life.  I believe my before and after pictures tell the story

The next 2 or 3 posts will be dedicated to sharing information of studies regarding mind-body interaction and stories of others who had drastic improvements in their health through changing the health of their thoughts and feelings. Some would call a couple of these miraculous.

Have you or anyone you know experienced amazing improvements in health without the use of surgery or medications? I would love to hear from you.
